Mr. Shinoda's
experiment to study the human's sense of space. Mr. Shinoda rejected excessive elements to
the design, wanting to restrict the experiment to just the relation between the sense of
space and eyesight. He knew that proportion, contrast, color and dimension can effect the
perception of an item's size.
This suitcase is designed to be of no practical use, and to fool the eye, appearing
smaller than it actually is. This suitcase can hold 30,000,000 yen (3,000 sheets of ten
thousand yen bills - about US$ 300,000.00).
"Why 30,000,000 yen?
Because I think that amount is one an individual can visualize. No particular symbology.
Nobody has just guessed that the briefcase can hold 30,000,000 yen, yet. Almost everybody
guesses less than that. Many people guess less than 10,000,000 yen. To me, that makes this
project a success." (Morio Shinoda)
In December 1997, we experimented to
see how much money we could actually fit into the suitcase, with the cooperation of the
bank. As result, we know we can fit 33,300,000 yen, as seen on the left. After this
experiment, we named this project as BX-3000+330.
